PROJECT

With a strong belief in natural sustainability German lighting design and manufacturer Silence Lights GmbH focus on developing lighting that is reliable, water and dust proof as well as easy to repair. Always looking for new challenges the company is constantly pushing the limits of what is possible, translating new developments into real applications. To showcase the versatility and adaptability of their products the company decided to build what is, according to Guinness World Records, the brightest LED luminaire in the world. Since any LED can achieve very bright results for a short period of time under laboratory conditions they decided to build a light that can be switched on nearly indefinitely and only uses passive air cooling.

SOLUTION

Light this bright requires a serious number of LEDs, around 500 in fact. Mounted on the company's own in-house designed PCB this number of LEDs releases 4000 Watts of power. To manage the enormous amount of heat generated Silence Lights CNC machined their own aluminium heatsink weighing a massive 50 kg (110 lbs). Measuring 80 cm (31.5 inch) in diameter the heatsink releases the absorbed heat into the environment. This huge amount of light also needs some focus and the company chose LEDiL's EMILY family for the job. Staying true to their fundamental belief in natural sustainability this massive luminaire was water and dust proof sealed with a glass plate.

BENEFITS

Having the right density of LEDs on the PCB was crucial to the project's success. Too low a density would have resulted in the need for an even bigger heatsink adding more weight. Using LEDs with a higher power rating would have created even higher temperatures. LEDiL's EMILY family allowed the designers to place the LEDs so that there was only a small gap in between the optics while still having an efficient beam direction.
